Aquatech Heat Pumps

Aquatech’s range of heat pump hot water units are the best value units on the market.

They come in three sizes:

  1. Aquatech Rapid X6 (225L) - suitable for 1-3 people

  2. Aquatech Dynamic X8 (270L) - suitable for 3-5 people

  3. Hydrotherm Fusion X8 (320L) - suitable for 4+ people

We’ve analysed the whole heat pump market and Aquatech’s units tick all the boxes: they are reliable, affordable and low maintenance. The last thing we want is to install a cheap and cheerful unit, only for a customer to call us with problems in three years time.

Heat pumps need to last and Aquatech has a strong track record.

Let’s go through each of the main considerations.

1. Cost

Aquatech’s units range from $1,800 to around $2,500 ex GST based on the size of the unit. Depending on your margin, this can mean a fully installed unit for around $2,000 payable by the customer.

Aquatech units are at the lower end of the heat pump mid market. They are more expensive than lower quality units like Ecogenica or Chromagen, but they are more affordable than other mid-market units like Rheem, Rinnai and iStore.

2. Reliability and Warranty

‍ ‍

Aquatech units have a strong track record of reliability. Aquatech units score well on review websites like www.productreview.com.au, from hundreds of reviews. The Aquatech Dynamic X8 scores 4.7 whereas the Rolls Royce of heat pumps (Reclaim units) scores 4.8.

Up until recently, the warranty has been the only thing letting the Aquatech units down. Whereas other mid-market units like iStore and Haier have 5 plus year warranties on both parts and labour, Aquatech only offered a 2 year labour warranty. We need heat pumps to last and I’ve always advocated that heat pump warranties should be longer.

On 20 August 2025, I was thrilled to see Aquatech increase its warranty to 5 years on both parts and labour. And it gets better – if you leave a review on ProductReview after installation, either positive or negative, Aquatech will increase the warranty 7 years, both parts and labour. With the exception of Reclaims and Sandens, which come with a price tag, this is a market leading warranty.

I think this a strong show of faith by the company in its product.

3. Refrigerant

‍ ‍

The Dynamic X8 uses Propane (R290) as the refrigerant.

4. Maintenance

‍ ‍

Aquatech’s heat pump hot water units are very easy to maintain. Owners are required to open the PTR valve and check the unit every six months, as well as a major service every five years. This is consistent with the better quality units on the market. Some poorer quality units even require a plumber to maintain the unit every six months, which is a pain for the customer and will drive up running costs over the long run.

Aquatech units use an impressed current anode to protect the tank. Most units on the market use a sacrificial anode – a long rod of magnesium or other reactive metal that sacrifices itself instead of the tank. These are effective but they degrade, leading to a build up of residue which needs to be flushed, and they need to be checked and replaced. An impressed current anode on the other hand uses an electric current to protect the tank, resulting in less maintenance for owners.

5. Delivery

Aquatech units can be delivered to site for $220 inc GST. Please note, Heat Pump Trade makes no margin on this.

Alternatively, units can be collected for free from a warehouse in Keysborough.

Other Factors

  • Noise – the unit operates at 43dB, at the lower end of the market

  • Tank Recovery time – at around 1 litre per minute, this is consistent with the rest of the market

  • Place of Manufacture – the units are manufactured in China, which is arguably another drawback, but most units on the market are made in China
